Our Lady, Queen of the Franciscan Order

Sixth window on the right side of the Church

This window honors all the Franciscan Friars who have served at Our Lady of Assumption Parish under the title of Mary, Queen of the Friars Minor. This title of Our Lady reflects the rich tradition and love of the Franciscan Order towards Mary, the Mother of God, to whom the Order is dedicated. The main window strongly images Mary, Queen of the Franciscan Order, standing over the basilica of Our Lady of the Angels as it stands today in Assisi.

The upper medallion depicts the small chapel of Our Lady of the Angels, usually called the Portiuncula, where Francis of Assisi and his friars lived, worked, and prayed. This small chapel is in the center of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels mentioned above. In our window, this little chapel is resting on the outline of the San Damiano Crucifix from which Francis heard God calling him to rebuild His Church.

The lower medallion portrays St. Francis of Assisi in the middle, the founder of the Order of Friars Minor (O.F.M.) and Poor Clares, Secular Franciscans, and all the varied orders and congregations following the rule and spirit of St. Francis. On one side of Francis is Saint Bonaventure, brilliant contemporary of St. Thomas Aquinas and one of the Order's greatest scholars. The other friar is St. Anthony of Padua, Everyone's Saint, great preacher and wonder-worker. The shield contains the image of the Franciscan emblem, the stigmatized hand of Francis over the wounded hand of Jesus with the Cross in the background. The motto of the Order is "Deus Meus et Omnis" (My God and my all).
